SPC vs WPC Vinyl Flooring: What’s the Difference?

If you have started shopping for vinyl plank flooring, you have probably seen the acronyms SPC and WPC on almost every box. Both describe rigid core vinyl, the category that has transformed the flooring market with waterproof, click-together planks that look remarkably like wood or stone. But the two are not identical. Understanding SPC vs WPC vinyl will help you pick the right product for each room in your home.

What Rigid Core Vinyl Is

Traditional luxury vinyl is flexible. Rigid core vinyl adds a stiff core layer that makes planks stable, easier to install over minor subfloor irregularities and less likely to show bumps underneath. Most rigid core planks are made up of several layers:

  • A clear protective wear layer, often with a UV-cured coating.
  • A high-definition printed design layer.
  • The rigid core, which is either SPC or WPC.
  • Often an attached underlay or backing for comfort and sound.

What Is SPC?

SPC stands for stone plastic composite, sometimes called stone polymer composite. The core is made primarily of limestone powder combined with PVC and stabilisers. The result is a thin, very dense and very rigid core.

SPC strengths

  • Dent resistance: the dense core resists impressions from furniture and dropped objects.
  • Dimensional stability: SPC is less affected by temperature changes, which is helpful near large windows or in sunrooms.
  • Waterproof core: ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms and basements.
  • Slim profile: helpful where transitions and door clearances matter.

What Is WPC?

WPC originally stood for wood plastic composite, though many modern WPC cores use foaming agents rather than actual wood. The core is thicker and lighter than SPC, with a slightly cushioned feel.

WPC strengths

  • Comfort: softer and warmer underfoot, which many people like in living areas and bedrooms.
  • Quieter: the foamed core absorbs more sound.
  • Waterproof core: like SPC, suitable for moisture-prone rooms.

SPC vs WPC: Side-by-Side

Durability

SPC’s density makes it more resistant to dents and heavy loads. WPC can show impressions more easily under very heavy furniture or sharp impacts. Scratch resistance is mainly determined by the wear layer and coating, not the core, so compare wear layer specifications on both.

Comfort and sound

WPC usually wins for underfoot comfort and acoustics. That said, many SPC products include attached acoustic pads that significantly improve both. Harbinger’s Signature Acoustic Click line is an example of a vinyl designed with sound in mind.

Temperature stability

SPC handles temperature swings especially well, which is useful in rooms with lots of sun or in seasonal spaces.

Installation

Both typically use click-lock systems and float over the subfloor. The subfloor must still meet the manufacturer’s flatness requirements. Proper expansion gaps and transitions are important for both.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Busy family homes, kitchens and entryways: SPC for its dent resistance.
  • Basements: SPC, with a suitable underlay, is our most common recommendation for Greater Victoria basements.
  • Bedrooms and living rooms where comfort matters most: WPC or SPC with a quality attached pad.
  • Condos: either, as long as the product and underlay meet your strata’s acoustic requirements.
  • Sunrooms and spaces near large windows: SPC for stability.

Beyond the Core: What Else to Compare

The core is only part of the story. When comparing vinyl planks, also consider wear layer thickness, plank size, edge details such as bevels, texture, the realism of the design, the warranty and indoor air quality certifications. A product that looks great in a showroom should also look great in your home’s light.

How Rigid Core Vinyl Is Installed

Most SPC and WPC floors are installed as floating floors. After the subfloor is cleaned, levelled and checked for moisture, planks are clicked together row by row with staggered end joints. An expansion gap is left around the perimeter and hidden by baseboards or quarter round. Transitions are placed at doorways or where the floor meets another surface. In wet areas, perimeter gaps are sealed with a flexible, manufacturer-approved sealant.

Because the planks click together rather than being glued or nailed, installation is relatively quick and individual planks can sometimes be replaced if damaged. That said, a professional installation ensures the subfloor is properly prepared and that the locking system is fully engaged along every seam, which is essential for long-term performance.

A quick buying checklist

Before you buy, confirm core type, wear layer, attached underlay, plank size, warranty terms and whether the product suits your room’s moisture and sunlight conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SPC or WPC better?

SPC is better for dent resistance and stability, while WPC offers more cushioning and quiet. The best choice depends on the room and your priorities.

Are SPC and WPC waterproof?

Both have waterproof cores. Proper installation and perimeter sealing in wet areas help protect the subfloor.

Can SPC go in a basement?

Yes. SPC is one of the most popular basement floors, installed over a clean, flat slab with the recommended underlay.

Yes. Contact us to schedule an estimate.

Does the core affect scratch resistance?

Not very much. Scratch resistance mainly comes from the wear layer and its surface coating. The core influences dent resistance, stability and comfort. When comparing products, look at the wear layer specification and finish alongside the core type, and ask to see samples so you can feel the texture and judge the realism of the design yourself.
